Haitian-Americans have a history in the U.S.A that dates back to the days of the American Revolution when a contingent of 6,000 Haitians helped fight the British in South Carolina and Georgia. Members of the world’s first black republic have fought alongside Americans in both World Wars, provided labor that dug the Panama Canal and precipitated the Louisiana Purchase that shaped America west of Mississippi.

The man who founded the city of Chicago, Jean Baptist Pointe Du Sable, was of Haitian heritage. Today, the Haitian heritage translates into one of the most politically astute ethnic communities in the melting pot. Yet, historical facts overshadow other important contributions.

Haitians outnumber all other Caribbean groups in medical doctors and are fast approaching the lead for engineers and computers scientists. Roumain and other Haitian writers were lauded from the days of the Harlem Renaissance. The Haitian regard for scholarship is renowned worldwide as is their indigenous art work.

The Haitian community in America is estimated to be above 1.5 million people, most of whom retain fervent ties to the current social political and economic activities in Haiti.

The phenomenon of "Radio Loyalty" is particular to the Haitian-American personality as a retention from their motherland, where even the shoeless have transistor radios for news of current events.
